Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems, Boston, Massachusetts

thyssenkrupp Elevator, Education solutionsthyssenkrupp Elevator contributed a six-stop, machine room- less synergy elevator at the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE), a first-of-its-kind research and demonstration building for sustainable technologies. The “living laboratory” is located in Boston’s Innovation District and features an elevator that uses very little energy, has an auto-shutoff for lights and is made with a cab interior that is free from VOCs. The elevator is so energy-smart that it will actually generate power for use by the building. This is done when the elevator brakes. The energy produced can be fed back into the building’s electrical grid rather than being dissipated as heat. Fraunhofer CSE embarked on a deep energy retrofit and renovation of the historic, 100-year-old building to transform it into a research and demonstration facility for advanced building energy technologies.

Austin College, Sherman, Texas

thyssenkrupp Elevator, Education solutionsthyssenkrupp Elevator was chosen by Austin College in Sherman, Texas to provide the elevators for their new IDEA Center building. The facility, designed to meet LEED Silver certification, will include renewable energy resources, ecologically friendly construction, materials to support efficient energy consumption, solar shading and natural light, rooftop rainwater collector for irrigation, and native vegetation landscaping. The synergy 300 elevators will provides greater flexibility in configuration, capacity and speed and the machine room-less design allows the designers to maximize building space. College officials anticipate the science building’s observatory will allow further outreach to the larger community and school children across North Texas. The building is expected to open in fall 2013.
